Kritters & Essential Oils

Many people ask me all the time if it is safe for their kritters to be around essential oils and diffusers. There are some essential oils that are safe however, I find that it would be much easier to highlight the dangerous ones.  Hopefully the information, links, and references will answer all your questions that you may be thinking on essential oils around our kritters & animals.

Here are some of the most dangerous oils for Cats. 

  • Wintergreen
  • Sweet birch
  • Citrus (d-limonene)
  • Pine
  • Ylang ylang
  • Peppermint
  • Cinnamon
  • Pennyroyal
  • Clove
  • Eucalyptus
  • Tea tree (melaleuca)
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Lavender

Here are some of the most dangerous oils for Dogs.

  • Cinnamon

Here are some signs that your pet may be having a negative or adverse reaction to oils that we should reach out to our veterinarians or emergency rooms for:

  • The smell of essential oils on their fur, skin, breath or vomit
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Drooling
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty walking or stumbling
  • Muscle tremors
  • Pawing at the mouth or face
  • Redness or burns on their lips, tongue, skin or gums
  • Vomiting
